Our projects
Awareness Campaign:
· Launch a campaign to educate local authorities and the general public about the cultural significance of the Afro-Caribbean community’s activities.
· Utilize various communication platforms, including local media, social media, and public meetings, to highlight community stories, traditions, and contributions.
· Focus on changing perceptions of these cultural activities from being seen as nuisances to valuable enrichments to the neighborhood.
Contesting Evictions and Combating Gentrification:
· Actively contest evictions under the pretext of renovations and address the challenges of gentrification.
· Employ tenant rights laws and regulations to protect community members.
· Raise awareness about the impact of gentrification and collaborate with tenant rights groups and community organizations for support.
Recognition as Canadian Intangible Heritage:
· Work towards getting the Afro-Caribbean community’s cultural practices recognized as Canadian intangible heritage.
· Collect documentation and testimonies highlighting the historical, cultural, and social importance of these activities.
· Engage with local cultural and heritage organizations for guidance on the recognition process.
Housing Cooperative Acquisition and Fundraising:
· Explore options for acquiring a building or converting it into a housing cooperative to provide stable housing for the Afro-Caribbean community.
· Consult with housing support organizations, legal experts, and established housing cooperatives for advice on acquisition, financing, and cooperative management.
· Aim to own a community center to further strengthen community bonds and provide a dedicated space for cultural and social activities.
